Keeping Interactions Respectful
Updated over a month ago

At Schoolhouse, we prioritize fostering a positive and respectful learning environment. Keep in mind that in building a global community, we all have to learn to respect and uplift other people who have different cultures, backgrounds, communication styles, and belief systems than we do. This is not always easy—it takes patience, reflection and empathy. However, it's an awesome opportunity to learn interpersonal skills that will help you connect with all kinds of people later in life.

What tools can I use to remain respectful?

  • Be mindful of tone. If communicating asynchronously, note that text lacks the nuance of face-to-face communication. Use neutral language and considerate tone to avoid misunderstandings!

  • Show gratitude. Recognize when someone is doing their best, and even if you don't like the outcome, acknowledge the effort they're putting in.

  • Respect different opinions, even when you disagree. People have diverse perspectives. It's okay to disagree, but do so respectfully. Avoid personal attacks and focus on discussing ideas, without invalidating others perspectives.

  • Avoid offensive language. Refrain from using offensive language, slurs, or derogatory terms. Be aware that certain words or phrases may be hurtful to others.

  • Acknowledge your mistakes. If you realize you made a mistake or misunderstood someone, acknowledge it. Apologize if necessary, and be open to learning from the experience.

  • Stay open-minded towards the communication styles of others. Some people may not be fluent in the same trends, slang or cultural norms that you are, and they may use a different tone in their communication than you're used to. Do your best to interpret others' communication with positive intent, and accept that it may sound different from what you'd use with friends from your own circle.

  • Avoid heat of the moment responses. Take a moment to consider your words before posting. Avoid impulsive or emotional responses that may escalate a situation.

  • Report inappropriate behavior, instead of reacting to it. If you encounter disrespectful behavior, report it to the Safety Team.
