What types of conversations are appropriate at Schoolhouse?
What types of conversations are appropriate at Schoolhouse?
Updated over a month ago

Schoolhouse is a non-profit platform that aims to connect the world through learning in a safe and inclusive way. Unlike social media platforms, Schoolhouse focuses on connecting through learning rather than having purely social interactions. To maintain this focus and ensure a safe environment for everyone, we moderate all messages, DMs, and sessions.

On Schoolhouse and official Schoolhouse channels, you are welcome to discuss topics that align with our mission of learning and personal growth. These include:

  • Academic topics and discussions

  • Extracurricular activities such as art, cooking, music, etc.

  • Tutoring tips and strategies

  • Warm-up conversations related to checking in on each other's well-being to facilitate a comfortable learning environment

To ensure the safety and inclusivity of our platform, certain topics should be approached with caution and may be flagged by our safety system if they are deemed inappropriate. These include:

  • Deep personal life and relationships: General personal sharing is allowed but avoid deeply personal or sensitive details.

  • Mental or physical health: Light discussions around stress and well-being are acceptable but avoid in-depth discussions or advice on mental and/or physical health. If a community member is seeking in-depth mental health help from you or you are generally concerned about a community member’s mental health, please refer to this resource.

  • Political discussions: General awareness and educational discussions are fine but avoid partisan debates or advocacy.

  • Religious topics: Sharing cultural and educational aspects of religion is acceptable but avoid proselytizing or in-depth doctrinal debates.

  • Sharing personal information or social media details: For safety reasons, please do not share personal contact information or social media profiles. When applicable to a session, sharing your college or university is allowed.

Even when chatting with friends met outside the Schoolhouse platform, such as in real life or through a Schoolhouse volunteer team, it is essential to adhere to these guidelines while using the Schoolhouse platform.

We want you to be able to develop authentic connections on Schoolhouse but it's important to maintain a focus on learning and personal growth within a safe and respectful environment. This policy helps ensure that conversations stay appropriate and constructive, creating a community where everyone feels comfortable and supported. For verified college users, we do have more relaxed restrictions to encourage connecting on a social and professional level with other verified college students.
