Advice for High School Freshmen

Congrats, you’ve finished middle school and are heading to high school! Now what? This transition can be overwhelming, but you’re not alone. Here are some ways you can prepare:

Tour the Building

Some high schools offer tours before school starts. Touring your school’s building can help you familiarize yourself with the layout and environment; you might even make some new friends along the way!

Buy School Supplies

Purchasing new binders, pencils, or spare writing paper is generally a good idea. However, hold off on buying everything right away, as your teacher may give you a list of supplies to get once school starts.

Make the Most of Your Summer

Don’t spend the rest of your summer stressing about high school. Be sure to enjoy your favorite activities to de-stress from the previous school year! After relaxing over the summer, your mind will be energized and prepared for the adventure ahead!

Reach Out

Once school begins, meet with your high school’s guidance counselor to make sure your classes meet graduation requirements. It’s common for schedules to have gaps or require some adjustments, so meeting with your guidance counselor allows you to address inconsistencies and possibly change classes while spots remain available. If you start to struggle in a class, reach out to your teacher; they are a great way to clear up any confusion or prepare for exams. After all, your teachers understand the course material best.

Join Clubs

Beyond academics, participating in school clubs may help you discover a new interest, refine a skill, or find a new hobby. Furthermore, interacting with your peers through clubs can strengthen your interpersonal, cooperation, and leadership skills, which are all necessary in life.

Takeaway

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to high school, so follow your intuition and enjoy these next four years!
