About

Preface: This course will NOT be going over problem solving techniques for the AMC. In the future, I will be hosting a course dedicated to that, but this course is specifically about writing a mock AMC, not taking one. In this course, we will be going over some key ideas in deciding to write and organize a mock AMC on the AoPS Mock Contests forum (or somewhere else). Some topics we will be covering are how to brainstorm ideas, how to write AMC problems, how to organize a test, and more. I will also be adding topics with questions which students may have. We will not require specific math experience, but it is recommended that you have taken the AMC 8/10/12 at least once. We will also be using Overleaf when constructing the test. By the end of the course, we should have a finished mock AMC 8 containing problems which the class and I have written. We will start with five sessions, but it is very likely that I will add more than that. This course will be collaborative; everyone taking this course will be focused on one ultimate project - creating a mock AMC 8. Furthermore, this course will encourage giving feedback to other people's problem proposals, since this is a key component in the problem writing process. Each session will last for around 30 minutes.

Tutor Qualifications

I have released many mock AMC competitions on the AoPS Mock Contests forum on the AoPS website, most notably the De Mathematics Competitions (DMC), over the past two years. I have received feedback from test-takers, most of which is positive feedback on the quality of the problems.

About the Tutor

Hi! My name is Taiki (he/him), and I am a college undergraduate student double majoring in math and computer science and minoring in Japanese. For fun, I like to solve competition math problems, learn Japanese, play the electric guitar, and draw.

Session 1

Enrichment

In this first session, I will go over some examples of popular mock AMC contests on AoPS, go through each one, and analyze what I see they do well. Due to timing, we may end up discussing other topics or even end the session early.

Session 2

Enrichment

In this second session, I will go over what things are important when deciding to write your own mock AMC. I will also introduce the Art of Problem Solving forums and create one for our group.

Session 3

Enrichment

In this third session, I will go over key points with "testsolving" a mock AMC. Some key points to look out for are realism and difficulty control, on top of how enjoyable the problems are.

Session 4

Enrichment

In this fourth session, I will go over some key points when figuring out how to write AMC problems. We will be going over both what is recommended and what is not recommended. I will also ask everyone to come up with at least one problem on their own for practice, and I will give feedback on it.

Session 8

Enrichment

In this eighth session, I will go over how to compile and order the problems on Overleaf. Although this site will seem intimidating at first, I will provide you with a recommended template, and placing the problems on the document should be easier than it looks.

Session 9

Enrichment

In this ninth session, we should hopefully have a decent number of written problems for our mock AMC 8. We will go over which problems we should use for our test.
