About

Hey all! I am a high school rising senior, and I have been a beekeeper for 3 years. Me and a biology teacher am currently making a fully-fledged beekeeping course for my school. This series will serve as a glimpse into that course, covering the basics. We'll learn about all different aspects of beekeeping, learning about biology, management, diseases, and crop. It is a whole different world in the beehive, and the science behind it is breathtaking. Have you never seen a beehive before? That's okay! This series is set for anyone interested in learning a little something about beekeeping. You’ll spend each session with me and a small group of other learners. Since it’s a small group, you can expect sessions to be very interactive as you work together to learn as you can! Note: Cameras should be on so we can all get to know each other! If you have a specific reason why you can’t have your camera on, please notify me ahead of time.

Tutor Qualifications

I have been a beekeeper for 3 years. It started over COVID when I got a beehive at my house. I then was able to get a grant for my school to get their own beehive. I have led the initiative managing the school beehive and teaching others how to do hive inspections. I am now working with a teacher to create a fully-fledged beekeeping minor course curriculum.

Please do not miss more than one session, as that will negatively affect your learning and may also take up a spot from another learner who could have attended every session. If you have to miss a session, please send me a message via the schoolhouse chat function.

In this session, we'll start with an orientation to get to know each other? Where are you from? What are your passions? After that, we will dive into the ups and downs of beekeeping.

Session 2

Enrichment

In this session, we'll be discussing the biology of the honey bee. The biology of honey bees is very complex. There are three different castes of honey bee and each do a variety of things! Altogether, the honey bee colony can be thought of as a superorganism. As a superorganism, the colony's behavior, health, and reproductive process can be interpreted in a different way. We'll be diving into all of that in this session.

Enrichment

In this session, we'll be discussing the process of establishing a honey bee colony. Arguably, this is one of the most exciting parts of the beekeeper's job. We'll be talking about everything from the structure of the beehive to "installing" a beehive. This is really cool to watch for the first time, to install a package you shake the bees out of a box, and it almost looks like you're pouring liquid bees!

Enrichment

In this session, we'll be discussing the process of ongoing management of a honey bee colony. This is what separates a beekeeper from a bee-haver. Managing a beehive is highly dependent on the time of year as the colony changes how it functions based on the weather and climate. In the summer, there will be surplus bee activity, but it might seem like there is none in the winter. We'll be going over each step from the first spring to the new year.

Enrichment

In this session, we'll be discussing the disease, pests, and predators of honey bees. Have you ever heard of colony collapse disorder? Varroa mites? American Foulbrood? There are so many challenges that honey bees face, and it us up to the beekeeper to be able to identify them and act quickly. In addition, I'll be telling a story of how I lost one of my colonies to varroa mites.
