About

I plan on teaching how to solve the Rubik's Cube! Specifically, I will be teaching the Beginner's Method (layer-by-layer). I'll also be teaching a bit of Singmaster notation on the side (which is the standard Rubik's Cube notation and is used in official competitions). You should have a working 3x3x3—preferably, you should have one that turns well. A lot of the dollar stores around my house sell okay-turning cubes, so you may have luck with those (try to get the ones with rounded corners on each of the cubies/little cubes). Other than that, there's good quality cubes on the internet. Some good sellers are TheCubicle, SpeedCubeShop. AliExpress, etc. (Do not buy a GAN if you are just starting out, it'll be a waste—QiYi is a good budget brand and MoYu is all-around nice. Also, don't buy a Rubik's Brand.) Other than that, I'll also include some history behind the Rubik's Cube (and other puzzles with enough interest), and I'll introduce some of the Rubik's Cubing communities that are out there. I'm open to more suggestions! As such, the exact specifics in the schedule will be tentative. I do know that I will host on Mondays and Thursdays at 19:30 EDT (except on holidays and that one day on June 28). I will usually also host office hours the day after at the same time. I will not be going over speed-solving methods (CFOP, Roux, Petrus, ZZ, etc.) as I have not mastered all the algorithms. For CFOP specifically, YouTuber JPerm has a good compilation of tutorials.

Tutor Qualifications

I'm a collector who currently has 51 Rubik's puzzles! Although I'm not a speedcuber by any means, I've been playing with my collection ever since I got my first cube in primary school.

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

You're free to attend or skip whichever sessions you want, although I highly recommend attending the ones marked as "Meetup"s (especially the solving sessions) since they build onto each other. However, it is summer break, so remember to spend time with family.

About the Tutor

My name is Daphne, and I'm from New York. My two favorite subjects are science and math. In my free time, you may catch me conspiring with my Rubik's Puzzle collection, playing random story-driven games (I love pixels!), drawing and burning myself out while doing so, or hugging stuffed animals.

Session 1

Orientation

We'll start off by introducing ourselves. Then, I'll go over Singmaster notation. If time permits, I can start going over the first layer.

Session 2

Other Topics

I plan to continue going over the first layer. This consists of solving the colors to one side, whilst keeping the other colors of the corners and edges the same (this will make much more sense with a visual example). I'll basically teach the intuition for both.

Session 3

Other Topics

I will discuss second layer solving methods (two algorithms total, although you're fine with remembering one or the other)!

Session 4

Office Hours

Feel free to join (or not join) or leave at any time! I'll be helping out those who are having trouble with the first or second layers.

Session 5

Other Topics

I will begin teaching the third layer solve, which is also the hardest. This session, I will be covering edge orientations and permutations.

Session 6

Session 9

Other

I'll go over a few fun Rubik's Cubing patterns! If time permits, I'll also recommend some puzzles to pursue after the 3x3.
