About

In this session we will go over the basics of how to use IBM Quantum Lab and Composer to make programs that can be run on real quantum computers. We will learn how they are different from regular computers, some foundational basic concepts of quantum mechanics, and just have a lot of fun in general!

Tutor Qualifications

I am a longtime member of the Quantum Computing club at my school where we learned and practiced using IBM Quantum Lab. I was a part of the Quantum Computing Team Research project in the 2022 New Jersey Governor's School in the Sciences.

Session 1

Orientation

What does 'quantum' even mean? What's different about the quantum world and how is that applicable in real life? What is a quantum computer and why would we ever want one? We will try to answer these questions as we briefly look at the history of quantum mechanics, from the double slit experiment to the Stern-Gerlach experiment, and introduce the concepts and the tools we will be working with - wavefunctions, qubits, states and superposition.

Session 2

Other Topics

Let's start doing some activities and learning step by step! We will familiarize ourselves with IBM Quantum Composer as we first get a grasp of classical gates, then explore how adding quantum properties to the mix creates more possibilities for what we can do - like solving a simple 2x2 sudoku.

Session 3

Other Topics

We'll dive deeper into the nature of superpositions, and how we can use them in subtler ways to store a range of information in just a single qubit, looking at another application of quantum computing.

Session 4

Other Topics

We will explore in more detail the concept of entanglement, and the incredible potential it has for secure transfer of information via a process known as Quantum Teleportation.

Session 5

Other Topics

We will go in more detail regarding the process of entanglement and its applicability in telecommunications, using the example of Quantum Teleportation.
