About

New learners welcome!! Each week, we'll go over some essential topics covered usually in introductory/honors chemistry classes and then branch off into more advanced topics that you might encounter in an AP Chemistry class for an hour. These sessions are intended to be a chill but effective way to review or learn new material!
People with any kind of chemistry experience (including those who do not have it) are encouraged to come! Please also feel free to suggest any topics that you would like to see ❤️

You are free to choose which sessions you want to attend. You do not need to message the tutor in advance :D

It is recommended that you attend as many as possible as chemistry builds on itself. If you are ever interested in a makeup session please let the tutor know!

Session 1

Orientation

We'll have a brief orientation and then discuss how the sessions will work (and determine future times), and then review some fundamental chemistry topics for more advanced chemistry.

Session 2

Molecular and ionic compound structure and properties

We'll cover moles, molar mass, mass spectroscopy, elemental composition, composition of mixtures, atomic structure, electron configuration, photoelectron spectroscopy, periodic trends, valence electrons, and ionic compounds (aligned with Unit 1 of the AP Chemistry curriculum). We will also cover chemical bonds and intramolecular forces; potential energy; structures of ionic solids, metals, and alloys; lewis diagrams; resonance and formal charge; and VESPR and bond hybridization (aligned with Unit 2 of the AP Chemistry curriculum).

Session 3

Intermolecular forces and properties

We will cover intermolecular forces; properties of solids; solids, liquids, and gases; ideal gas laws; kinetic molecular theory; deviation for the ideal gas law; solutions and mixtures; representations of solutions; separation of mixtures and solutions; solubility; spectroscopy and electromagnetic spectrum; photoelectric effect; and the Beer Lambert's Law (aligned with Unit 3 of the AP Chemistry curriculum).

Session 4

Chemical reactions

We'll introduce chemical reactions (aligned with Unit 4 of AP Chemistry) and introduce net ionic equations, representations of equations, physical and chemical changes and stoichiometry. After, we'll cover acid and base reactions (and titrations) as well as oxidation-reduction reactions.

Session 5

Thermodynamics

First we'll start off with reaction rates (aligned with Unit 5 of AP Chemistry) by covering rate laws, concentration changes, elementary reactions, the collision model, the reaction energy profile, reaction mechanisms, steady state approximation, multistep reactions, and catalysts. We'll compare that to Unit 6 of AP Chemistry by covering endothermic and exothermic reactions, energy diagrams, heat transfer and thermal equilibrium, heat capacity and calorimetry, enthalpy of reactions, bond enthalpies, enthalpy of formation, and Hess's Law.

Session 6

Equilibrium

In this session we'll introduce equilibrium and reversible reactions and their representations (following Unit 7 of the AP Chemistry curriculum) and then talk about the equilibrium constant and reaction quotient. Then we will introduce Le Chatelier's Principle, the Common Ion Effect, Solubility Equilibria, and the Free Energy of Dissolution.

[MAKEUP] In this session we'll review Units 3 (intermolecular forces and properties) and 4 (chemical reactions) of the AP Chemistry curriculum.

Session 8

Other Topics

[LESSON REQUEST] We will go over essentials of the periodic table, including the concepts of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids as well as the properties. We will also be covering ions, including cations + anions as well as polyatomic ions.

Session 9

Acids and bases

We'll introduce acids and bases based on Unit 8 of the AP Chemistry curriculum, introducing strong and weak acids and bases and their reactions and titrations. We will cover their equilibria and molecular structure and then move onto talking about pH, pKa, pOH, properties of buffers, the Henderson-Hasselbach Equation, and Buffer Capacity.

Session 10

Applications of thermodynamics

We'll introduce entropy (aligned with Unit 9 of the Ap Chemistry curriculum) and talk about Gibbs Free Energy, thermodynamic favorability, kinetic control, free energy and equilibrium, coupled reactions, galvanic (voltaic) and electrolytic cells, cell potential and free energy, electrolysis, and Faraday's Law. [This will likely be the last session for this summer!]
