About

Want to have a good foundation of some of the most important topics in Pre-Algebra and shown throughout Algebra 1? We will be learning everything there is to know about equations (multi-step, variables, systems), inequalities (multi-step, variables, patterns), and exponents (word problems, factors, variables). The topics that will be covered are listed below! - Algebraic equations basics - One-step equations (PEMDAS) - Finding mistakes in one-step equations - One-step equation word problems - Intro to inequalities with variables - Dependent and independent variables - Prime and Composite Numbers - Prime Factorization - Writing Expressions/Equations - Word/Number Patterns - Combining Like Terms - Distributive Property and Substitution - Equivalent Expressions - Two step equations w/ decimals & fractions - Interpreting linear expressions - Systems of Equations (substitution, graphing, elimination) - Equations w/ variables on both sides, parenthesis - Slope-Intercept Form - Graphing Proportional Relationships

About the Tutor

Hello! I'm Suhani, a high schooler from Northern Virginia and I'd like to help others as a tutor. Currently, I participate in Science Olympiad with my interest in Math, Science, and Writing. I also take part in a Model United Nations Club at my school. A few of my other hobbies include playing sports (swimming, golf, basketball, track), art, reading, and hanging out with friends. I'm excited to tutor with Schoolhouse and helping you all!

Session 1

Orientation

We will be doing some icebreakers and just getting to know each other as well as going over the description of this series and providing an overview of the series. I will also be answering any pre-course questions you have!

Session 2

Factors and multiples

We will be covering the definitions of factors and multiples and then moving forward to prime numbers, composite numbers, and prime factorization. We will also be doing many practice problems and answering any questions about the topic along the way! Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!

Session 3

Patterns

We will start off by simply understanding math patterns through tables and then move to constructing them! This means writing expressions, evaluating expressions with and without parenthesis, and then translating those expressions. Moving forward, we will understand number patterns and practice rules, tables, graphs, and relationships that work with two variables. Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!

Session 4

Variables & expressions

Part One! Time to start learning about variables! Definitely, one of my personal favorite things to learn about! We will be covering parts of algebraic expressions and then learn about substitution and evaluating expressions as well as word problems. This will include distributive property, equivalent expressions, and combining like terms! Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!

Session 5

Variables & expressions

Part Two!

Session 6

Office Hours

An optional session for anyone to drop in, ask questions, and practice if needed! If you have missed a previous session, I highly recommend joining this session to learn the topics you missed!

Session 7

Equations & inequalities introduction

We will begin working with one step equations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and finding mistakes in them. We will then cover word problems and begin an intro to inequalities w/ variables and work our way into dependent + independent variables! Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!

Session 8

One-step and two-step equations & inequalities

We will start off by reviewing combining like terms and continue into the distributive property. Next, we will learn about interpreting linear expressions and finally learn all about two-step equations (w/ decimals, fractions, word problems) and one-step/two-step inequalities. Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!

Session 9

Exponents intro and order of operations

We will fully understand the concept of exponents and learn how to solve them, apply them, and translate them in expressions. Next, we will move onto order of operations (PEMDAS) and complete many practice problems on it. Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!

Session 11

Multi-step equations

We will be covering equations with variables on both sides and parenthesis. We will also learn how to identify the number of solutions to a given equation (one solution, infinite amount of solution, no solution), and wrap up the lesson with practicing word problems. Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!

Session 12

Systems of equations

We will start off with a quick intro to systems of equations and move forward into solving systems of equations with multiple different methods such as graphing, substitution, and elimination! Optional practice will always be posted at the end of each session in the chat and any notes or other session material covered are available by request!
