Learn the essentials of writing impactful argumentative essays in bi-weekly/weekly sessions where the process will be broken down into easy-to-follow steps and engage in fun activities to enhance your academic writing skills.

What to Expect:

Collaborative Essay: We'll write an essay together on a topic of your choice.
Practice Topics: Explore various topics through practice exercises.
Core Skills:
Each 1-hour session will cover topics such as:
Crafting a strong thesis
Structuring your arguments
Effectively using evidence

Details:

Frequency: Twice a week during summer, weekly after 8/14/24
Duration: 1 hour per session

If you need additional help with your writing, we can schedule extra sessions!

Please do not miss more than three sessions during the semester. If you anticipate an absence, contact the tutor in advance.

Introduction to the class! We will review the fundamentals of argumentative writing and play a Kahoot to test our knowledge.

Essay Writing

We will continue to review the fundamentals by examining examples of citing evidence, addressing counterarguments, and more.

10 different prompts will be presented so start considering which one you want to write about!

Essay Writing

We will go over the prompts in more depth and there will be time for questions. Then, we will go over the basics of writing a strong first draft and there will be time in class to start writing.

Essay Writing

We will craft clear, concise, and debatable thesis statements review examples of strong and weak thesis statements, and practice creating thesis statements tailored to the essay prompts.

Essay Writing

We will understand the structure of an argumentative essay, including the introduction, body paragraphs, counterarguments, and conclusion. We will outline a sample essay together and discuss each section's role and how they connect.

We will develop strong, evidence-based arguments for the essay. We will review techniques for supporting arguments with evidence, discuss logical fallacies to avoid, and practice integrating evidence into arguments.

We will effectively address and refute counterarguments, review strategies for presenting and rebutting counterarguments, and practice incorporating them into their essays.

We will craft compelling introductions and conclusions., analyze examples of effective introductions and conclusions, and students will practice writing their own.

We will provide and receive constructive feedback on essay drafts. Working on conducting peer review sessions where students exchange drafts and offer feedback using a structured rubric.

We will revise drafts and prepare for final submission, go over common revision strategies, allow time for individual revisions, and finalize essays.

We will enhance essays using advanced writing techniques and finalize edits through a peer review. Learning techniques for clarity, coherence, and style, reviewing an editing checklist, providing individual assistance for specific issues, and conducting a final review.
