About

Mathematics is not all about plugging into formulas, practice drills or passing the test. According to mathematician and math professor Francis Su, studying mathematics answers a fundamental human desire to flourish, i.e. to live well. In his lovely book “Mathematics for Human Flourishing”, he outlined pathways to human flourishing through learning and doing mathematics in thirteen chapters on flourishing, exploration, meaning, play, beauty, permanence, truth, struggle, power, justice, freedom, community and love. In each of the sessions, we will discuss one of the chapters and reflect on our own journey of math learning and teaching, and explore how we could rethink math education with a renewed perspective, as a math student and a math teacher/tutor/coach, or parent/guardian. We will also work out some math problems that exemplify the topics discussed in this book. We will meet approximately every two weeks starting from October 30th on Saturdays 7:30-9:00pm, unless otherwise noted). This group is open to tutors, teachers, parents/grandparents/guardians, and students at all math levels. Both young and grownup are welcomed. About the Tutor

Hi, I have an M.S. degree in statistics and hold a Ph.D. in Information Systems. I am a data scientist with over 15 years of experience. I am now a college professor doing research in applied data science and machine learning, with application in healthcare and education. Statistics is a super useful subject though could be very confusing sometimes. In those stat sessions, I will help you to make sense and gain a deep understanding of the essential statistical concepts and hope to inspire you to pursue data analyst/data scientist careers in the future. I also teach AoPS math, always a big fan of interesting math problem solving. Come to join me to discover and be struggled and have fun - FUNSTRATION! Other than my passions in tutoring math, statistics and data science, I am also an interdisciplinary educational researcher. I study how to use data-driven technology to improve higher-order thinking skills and how to nurture habits of mind that are instrumental for STEM learning, including perseverance, creativity, curiosity, collaboration and critical thinking.
