About

Hi! Having trouble with the basics of algebra? Well, this is the perfect series for you! In this adventure, we will learn the following Algebra I topics: - Variables ("Why x?") - Solving equivalent expressions - Solving linear equations and inequalities - Unit conversion - Linear equations and graphs: slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form - Systems of linear equations - Graphs of linear inequalities This series is meant for beginners (who know pre-algebra) or those who just wish to brush up on their algebraic fundamentals. Each topic will be covered through interactive lectures, solving practice problems, and raising questions of our own. See ya!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Topics are cumulative, so try to attend every session (unless you want to focus on just one topic/session). If you can't attend a specific session, I can help you out by hosting a makeup session so that you can catch up on missed material.

Session 1

Orientation

"What's a variable?" That's a question we will answer in this session, as we enter the world of Algebra I! I will also introduce myself, and explain how the series will function. We will even do a fun icebreaker.
15
Jan

Session 2

Algebra foundations

We will recap what a variable is, and learn: - To evaluate expressions with one and multiple variables - To combine like terms - Equivalent expressions I will explain the math behind everything and we will attempt practice questions together.

Jan

Session 3

Solving equations & inequalities

Fasten your seatbelts — this is where things get serious! — 'cause today, we're going to learn about linear equations: what they are, how they can be manipulated, and different types.
22
Jan

Session 4

Solving equations & inequalities

Continuing with linear equations, we are going to look at more complicated ones — i.e., with unknown coefficients — and identify how many solutions a given equation can have (yes, there can be more or less than one solution!).

Jan

Session 5

Solving equations & inequalities

Today, we are going to learn about linear inequalities. They are similar to, but a little bit more involved than, linear equations.

Jan

Session 6

Review

We are going to review the topics covered in previous sessions, solve practice questions, and do a fun quiz.

Session 7

Working with units

Today, we'll learn dimensional analysis, how to convert between units (i.e., from m/s → km/h), and the use of appropriate units.
5
Feb

Session 8

Linear equations & graphs

Why do graphs exist? Join this session to find out, and learn about: - Linear graphs involving two variables - Finding the slope of a graph, and its intercepts - Applications of linear graphs (i.e., word problems)
11
Feb

Session 9

Forms of linear equations

We will learn the three equivalent ways of writing a linear equation of a graph: 1) Slope-intercept form 2) Point-slope form 3) Standard form We will derive the three, solve questions, and understand the benefits of each.

Session 10

Office Hours

Ask questions about what we've covered so far!

Session 11

Forms of linear equations

We will learn the three equivalent ways of writing a linear equation of a graph: 1) Slope-intercept form 2) Point-slope form 3) Standard form

Session 12

Systems of equations

Today we will look at what a system of two (or more) equations is, and how they can be solved using substitution, and elimination.
25
Feb

Session 13

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

In this session, we will solve real-life problems by graphing linear inequalities — a powerful process called 'linear programming'.
26
Feb

Session 14

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

Linear inequalities can be graphed, just like regular equations — they're just a little more complicated. How? That's what we'll learn today!

Session 15

Review

The final session! The journey ends with a brief recap of EVERY topic this session has spanned across.

Session 16

Functions

Introducing the concept of a relation, a function, and evaluating discrete and continuous functions — linear equations are a pre-requisite.
25
Mar

Session 17

Functions

How can you distinguish a function from a regular ol' relation? What are the types of relations? Well, there's a few: one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, many-to-many.

Session 18

Functions

Let's look at how we can determine the domain and range of any function — and admire different Range Rovers!

Apr

Session 19

Functions

It's time to look at the features of graphed functions: - Absolute minima and maxima - Relative minima and maxima - Increasing and decreasing intervals And, also, what is the inverse of y = x²? This is a question about inverse functions, which are weirdly awesome!

Session 20

Absolute value & piecewise functions

y = |x| is an 'absolute value function', which is what we shall learn today. Absolute value functions are always positive … And we should be, too.

Session 21

Absolute value & piecewise functions

It's time for 'piecewise functions' — they're a bit like pizza. They both start with 'P' and they can both be sliced into sections!

Session 22

Exponents & radicals

Exponents are an important part of both arithmetic and algebra, and in this session, we brush up on them and cover the laws of exponents.

Session 23

Exponents & radicals

It's time for radicals (or, roots). They are an exponent's best friend — and are a common sight in all of mathematics.
