About

What is art? While I think that there is no universally true answer to this question, it has certainly sparked a lot of debate. Schoolhouse is a place to come together, learn, and explore with peers, and I hope to do this with a creative lens in my series. For each session, we’ll explore a question related to art, have some debate and conversation, share tips for whatever the day’s topic will be, experiment hands-on with some drawing, and maybe include a game. For each session, you’ll need nothing more than a pencil, paper, some colors, and a ruler or other household object. **No expertise necessary!!** I hope to make this series as worry-free as possible, so if you don’t have a necessary utensil on hand, please tell me and I’ll help you find a workaround.

Tutor Qualifications

I took two art classes, scored in honor role for both, have been practicing drawing seriously for around 2.5 years, and this will be more of an open-floor session anyways!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Please attend any session you wish! We may repeat themes, so no worries if you’re interested in an idea that falls on a time you’re unable to attend. Please let me know if you’d like to present anything interesting for a session, I’d love to see!

About the Tutor

I’m a college student from Massachusetts. In my free time I like 3D printing (PRUSA + Fusion360), reading mysteries, wakeboarding and listening to music. I was on a number of volunteer teams here at Schoolhouse, and am now "retired." I enjoy tutoring art sessions, pre-Algebra help, and SAT R&W. Now, I'm studying International and Global Studies, Anthropology, Spanish, and Italian. 🩷💜💙

The Pros and Cons of Color Color is all around us, indeed it’s one of the most noticeable aspects of life. Our question for today is: Is color necessary? We’ll work to see all sides of answers to the question above, complete a hands-on experiment with color (no worries, all you’ll need is some paper, paint, crayons, anything colorful!) and also participate in an online activity.

I’ve Been Framed! Have you ever had to go shopping for a picture frame? Was it important if it was clear, colored, fancy, or plain? In this session, we’ll discuss framing. What is it, how does it work, and is it necessary for a piece of art? Should frames add to the artwork? We’ll work to see all sides of answers to the question above, complete a hands-on experiment with framing (today, all you’ll need is your device!) and also participate in an online activity.

The Evolution of Stickman Since the Stone Age, when cave people carved a series of shapes to depict their daily lives, humans have been fascinated with drawing themselves. Today, it’s a little bit harder to get our point across when drawing people. Between oversized (or undersized) heads, the nose that never looks quite right, and the dreaded eye, Are personal portraits important? We’ll work to see all sides of answers to the question above, complete a hands-on experiment with drawing people (again, no experience necessary, we’ll be working from the ground up, and all you’ll need is paper, pencil, and a ruler!) and also participate in an online activity.

Filmmaking took a long time to crack. From fuzzy screens and bunny ears (ask google, they’re a real thing, I checked!) to split-second action-movie climax scenes, so many things have changed in the process of brining us animated entertainment. The main idea has remained the same: make things move, make them entertaining, and make them portable. Today we’ll be answering the question “How detailed must an animation be to make it entertainment?” We’ll work to see all sides of answers to the question above, complete a hands-on experiment with creating a mini-mini-film (you’ll need a few pieces of white paper, a pencil, a pair of scissors, and a fastener [tape, paper clip, etc]) and also participate in an online activity.

Have your paper and fold it too Oragami. The ancient, complex, intimidating art of paper folding. Well, ancient, sure. But today, experts and beginners alike will learn to fold paper into cool creations. Is it possible for oragami to be on the same story-telling level as other works of art? We’ll work to see all sides of answers to the question above, complete a hands-on experiment with creating oragami, (all you’ll need is some paper, colored or plain, and scissors) and perhaps take part in an online activity.

Lights, Camera, Photograph! Once upon a time, a dark room with a small hole was used to replicate images. Now, around a thousand years later, you can tap a few buttons to capture, edit, and share moments in time. But since it’s so accessible and easily recreated, is photography actually an art form? We’ll work to see all sides of answers to the question above, discuss and prepare for a super interesting hands-on photography project (you’ll need a device to take pictures and a way to put those pictures on your computer) and perhaps take part in an online activity.
