About

We will cover: - Differentiating a range of functions & identifying the rule(s) needed to do so (e.g. power, chain, product & quotient rule) - Applying differentiation to many types of problems. This includes finding stationary points of curves, rates of change (& related rates), etc. [we will not be covering kinematics since this is best explained after learning integration] Throughout the series, learners will be able to practice applying their learning to different problems and will gain the independence to tackle these problems with ease. This is a fast-paced course that is also useful if you are looking to start calculus next year and would like to get a head start or need to review calculus if you think you struggled with it / need to refresh your brain on it, or even if you just want to learn differential calculus! Despite being quick, it is very comprehensive and should be useful for any high school student! No prior knowledge of calculus is required. Additionally, if you feel a bit confused about any of the explained concepts, you may always reach out to me and I will support you, be it with impromptu sessions or otherwise :D

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Please try and attend all the sessions, and message me if you are unable to make it! This series will be most useful to you if you have consistent attendance as we will cover a lot in a single session, and failure to show up may take away a spot for someone else.

If you miss two or more sessions without prior notice, you may be withdrawn from the series.

About the Tutor

I'm a recent IB graduate from Singapore and I'm really excited to be a tutor here on Schoolhouse.world! In my free time, I like playing tennis and board games, and watching Jeopardy! I speak 3 languages (English, Hindi & Spanish) but am always looking to learn more :D On SHW, I'm a current moderator of the Chemistry subworld as well as an SAT Bootcamp Guide and Coach. I mainly tutor these subjects, too, but also like helping out in other topics, such as Calculus!

Session 1

Differentiation: definition and basic derivative rules

We’ll start by getting to know each other and introducing the series. We’ll quickly go over the context of differentiation (and by first principles) before moving onto basic differentiation rules; namely, the power, product, chain and quotient rules. Practice problems will be present to cement our understanding.

Session 2

Differentiation: definition and basic derivative rules

We’ll start with a quick review of the content covered in the last session. We’ll then move onto learning how to differentiate trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions. We’ll introduce problems involving multiple rules of differentiation before completing a practice test to consolidate our learning.

Session 3

Differentiation: composite, implicit, and inverse functions

In this session, we’ll analyse differentiation through composite and inverse functions as a whole. Then, we’ll move onto implicit differentiation, which is another useful method of differentiating, and work through some practice problems related to this concept.

Session 4

Applying derivatives to analyze functions

We’ll review all of the differentiation rules we covered in the first three sessions first. Then, we’ll look at derivative curves, understand the concept of concavity and cover how to find the coordinates of stationary points using differentiation. This session will also explore how to find the equations of tangents and normals to curves at various points.

Session 5

Contextual applications of differentiation

This session marks the second part of our series: applications of differentiation! Since we covered stationary points last session, this session will look at rates of change and optimisation problems which have very important real-world applications. Many practice problems will be presented to consolidate our understanding. There will also be a short quiz to check our understanding thus far.
