About

N.B. This is a series for beginners! That might be around below ∼1000 elo on chess.com and below ∼1400 or so on lichess We'll work through the basics of how to play chess, and also build a few beginner skills! There will be lectures, exercises for the whole group, and a tournament to wrap up the whole series! No prior knowledge is needed, and if you'd like, I can host a few extra "office hours" sessions where I can go over any of your questions! The only requirement is that (if you plan on joining the online tournaments) you sign up to lichess.org which I highly recommend doing so anyway. There may be some small homework, but that will be optional, and simply just a few quizzes that you will get feedback for after!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Do try to make as many sessions as possible, since the knowledge is cumulative. If you are unable to make one for whatever reason you can message me! There is no strict attendance policy, though.

Session 4

Review

We will start with a quick recap on everything we've learnt so far, go through some basic checkmates, but then have an online chess tournament! This is so that you can familiarise with actually playing on a chess board and how the pieces move.

Session 5

Other Topics

We may do some exercises on previous topics, but I hope to start on piece interactions, i.e. how one piece may attack/defend/capture another, or how pieces interact with each other.

Session 6

Other Topics

We will summarise the previous topic of piece interactions, then continue to talk about thinking in chess and bad beginner habits!

Session 7

Other Topics

It depends on how much was covered in the previous session, but I hope to introduce the idea of the three stages of the game and talk about the 1st stage - the opening, and some beginner principles for the opening!

Session 8

Other Topics

We will start delving into essential endgames (the 3rd and final stage of the game). If there's any remaining time, I will show a few model games!

Session 9

Other Topics

Tactics! We will talk about forks, double attacks, pins and skewers!

Session 10

Other Topics

As a final session, we will have one final online tournament before the series ends. I've allowed 2 hours for this session (so that the games in the tournament aren't too fast and that one learner who requested the sessio to be moved is also able to join), but it might likely end before and feel free to join/leave at any point!
