Hi Luca! First off, thank you for your active participation on Schoolhouse and for leading such an informative session. Your expertise in calculus truly shines throughout! I noticed you utilized a tool that allows for annotation and problem-solving on a whiteboard, which is a fantastic approach. In this session, you covered several important ideas regarding derivatives and their applications. You showed how derivatives represent the instantaneous rate of change of a function at a specific point. Additionally, your explanation of the first derivative was excellent, as it effectively illustrates how the first derivative of a function tells the behavior of the original function. You also discussed how you can use derivatives in limit evaluation through L'Hopital's Rule. Overall, you did a remarkable job demonstrating your knowledge during this session! Keep up the fantastic work!

Yes, the learner definitely made progress! At first, there were some questions that the learner need help on. For example, on the question about the interval where the function is concave down, the learner struggled a bit in finding the intervals. Throughout the session, you have asked him many questions that prepared him well for future similar questions. Towards the end of the session, the learner can answer your questions without using much time, and answer them correctly, which shows that the learner made progress learning!

You did a really great job working with your learners in the question about the trees - it demonstrated patience and the way you explained things were also clear. As a high scorer in the English section of the SAT, maybe you could also give some more general tips for this type of question. If i were teaching this question, for example, I probably would have listed my first overall thought process in logic, like "in general, what overall message is this excerpt trying to express outside of simply just the underlined sentence"

You have a great understanding of the material, as well as also providing accurate questions that you annotate in order to further help the learners understand. Annotating the question while explaining is a great way for the learners to better grasp your explanations. I don't see anything that needs to be imrproved, as it seems like your explanations and visuals work well.

You did great at ~4:30 by strenghtening the learners confidence through congratulating them for answering the question right. You also did great in greeting all of the learners in the first session, prior to the session crashing. Throughout the lesson you also use names while explaining the answer such as at ~4:45. Overall, I don't see any problems, so just keep doing what your doing since it's going great.

While Luca asked students to engage with the material, he did not explicitly check for prior knowledge before diving into the questions. A brief review or a few questions to gauge their understanding of previous sessions could help tailor the discussion to their needs. Luca demonstrated adaptability by encouraging students to lead discussions and share their thoughts, which catered to different learning styles. Luca maintained a high level of engagement throughout the session by actively involving students in discussions. His strategy of rotating questions among participants and encouraging them to explain their answers fostered a collaborative learning environment. This approach not only kept students attentive but also built a sense of community.

I loved your slides! The Mario theme was so so so creative and it looks like it took a lot of time and effort to make them! This is clearly something that is unique and special to you as an Italian and I encourage you to keep up the creative and entertaining slides to keep viewers interested in your session! Love it! You clearly know what you're doing, the only piece of advice I may have is to get your learners to turn their cameras on and for them to unmute more to talk!

You asked more comprehension questions to learners while they were answering the question to ensure they understood the passage and answer choices, "and also, like Margarita why C? Sorry. Didn't ask you why C?" This is a great way to get the learner to keep talking about why they chose certain answers or for them to talk more about their thought process for the other learners.

The tutor gave the visuals live to the audience by drawing on a whiteboard. The tutor starts off by directly addressing each learning, and asking how they are doing. This is great, because it actively engages the audience and creates a comfortable learning environment.

At the 56-minute mark, the tutor asks the learner a definition of a word. The learner misinterprets the word for another meaning that is unrelated to economics. Afterward, the tutor gives the learner a question about the word's meaning, which she answers correctly. So yes, there is evidence that the learner made progress!

The way this series went session by session my command in R&W section kept growing. The questions were good and more than that were their explanations, very detailed, thorough, and to the point. You made every learner to give their insights on approaching the question, nice of you to give every learner a chance to have a say on a question and then you provide learnings. This has been a very effective series for me. I hope that this series will be a contributor for good on D-Day. Cheers!

-I believe that since you're going through a test that the learners already took, there was no "I do" part of the session. You go straight into having the learners talk about their answers to the practice test. -Thank you for calling on learners at random to read aloud questions and walk the class through it. I like that you asked the learners what type of question they're answering (e.g., command of evidence, words in context, etc.) to see if they know what they're supposed to be looking for. You also let the learners add on to each other's reasonings, which allows the class to get multiple perspectives on the same problem. Great job! -You annotate the screen as each learner shares their approach to the practice problem. You also give your own opinion as to which answer choices are the red herrings and which ones can be automatically eliminated after hearing some of the learners' reasonings. You basically sum up what the other learners said so that it's clearer to the rest of the class.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to greet as many learners as you could by name! You also ask them how they are doing before going into the lesson of the day, allowing the learners to get acquainted with one another. I like that when the learners answer a question correctly, you affirm their answers by using a positive phrase like "awesome!" This definitely helps boost their self-esteem and encourages them to participate more often. You could do a similar thing when they are incorrect, saying something like "you're on the right track. [another learner], would you like to explain why x is the correct answer and y isn't?"

-When you demonstrate how to solve problems, you either call on someone to read the problem out loud or ask them to contribute (such as by identifying what they think is the most important part of the problem, see ~23:07). Even when you are explaining the process behind problems, you call upon learners to provide their input, allowing you to tailor your lesson to their thought processes. -This is pretty large session! However, you get around this by choosing at random who to pick to read aloud a problem. You are evidently trying your best to include everyone, and you do a solid job at that. -Whenever you call upon a learner to read, you also ask them to start the problem if they think they have the ability to. You use this information to adjust your teaching method for that specific problem, and across the multiple practice problems you went through, this makes it so that the learners are exposed to multiple ways of solving problems. This means that they can determine what's the most effective for them. Great job!

Thank you so much for this just-finished series, it was a very amazing experience! I really loved it and it also made R&W which used to be one of my weak and boring parts of SAT very interesting and so simplified for me. Thanks a lot, I'm gonna miss R&W sessions so much! I really can't wait for the next R&W series. I'll also try my best possible to attend the upcoming Maths series. I'm not so much a football person but I honestly wish Italy GOODLUCK! 😊😇.

Well done again, Luca, on your exceptional session! You began by checking the learner's prior knowledge with a thoughtful question about what they had already learned. That was a great way to set the foundation of your session! After hearing that the learner was familiar with limits and derivatives and wanted to focus on derivatives, you adeptly tailored the majority of your session to address their needs. Throughout the session, you consistently checked in with the learner to ensure their understanding, and your frequent interactions demonstrated your commitment to engaging them effectively. I must admit, I envy your skill as a calculus tutor since me personally, I need to work on that! Moreover, you confirmed the learner's progress by asking them to solve problems and tell you what a derivative at a point means. These types of guiding questions throughout the session not only promote critical thinking but also empower the learner to take an active role in their understanding. Once again, fantastic job! Keep up the amazing work!

“
Throughout the session, Luca, you consistently encouraged the learner and provided positive reinforcement with phrases like "good," "well done," "yes!" and "right." These statements are powerful and significantly boost the learner's confidence, great work! You also excelled at creating a comfortable learning environment. As I mentioned earlier, your frequent interactions with the learner were amazing. In fact, it seemed that the learner contributed to around 50% of the talking time, which is an impressive statistic! This level of engagement creates a welcoming atmosphere, as the more they interact with you, the more comfortable they feel. One suggestion for future sessions would be to address the learner by their name. This small adjustment can enhance the personal connection and create an even more relaxed environment. Overall, once again, fantastic job!

You did well at ~3:00 by encouraging the learners to participate, as well as also engaging learners by asking one of them to answer the question; as well as also asking how the learners got their answer. You also did great in starting off the session with a warm up, however one thing you could improve on is checking for prior knowledge before the warm up questions, such as asking if they know how to solve it. You also do great in giving everyone a shot at the problems, such as at ~48:20 allowing the learner to go since they hadn't had a chance yet. Overall, you did great in engaging the learners, as well as allowing them to explain their own answers, however at the end of the session you can try and ask the learners how they feel in order to confirm their progress, as well as checking the learners prior knowledge before giving practice problems.

Luca effectively conveyed the material by encouraging student participation and breaking down complex questions. His approach of prompting students to explain their reasoning helped clarify concepts, as seen when Vamika explained her thought process regarding the use of past tense in question 19.

“
Luca effectively strengthened learners' confidence by creating a supportive atmosphere where students felt comfortable sharing their thoughts. His positive reinforcement, such as acknowledging correct answers and encouraging participation, helped build a trusting environment conducive to learning. Luca fostered a comfortable learning environment by being approachable and encouraging questions.

“
I liked how you asked for someone to read the question. This definitely gives you a small break and allows for the learners to hear from a different voice. What was even better is that you asked the learner about their thoughts on the paragraph when they were done: "So what are your thoughts about this question, Margarita?" This was a good way to involve your learners to solve out problems. You also made sure the learner gave explanations about each answer in their response, asking a learner about why they didn't choose a certain response, "What about d?" This is a great way to get the learner to expand on their thought process.
Tutor · 2 mo. ago
“
I loved how you interacted with and greeted your learners before the session started! Whether it was a simple "Hey (name) how are you," or you were talking about your slides/camera filter, you were able to connect with them about something besides the session content, which is important in creating a comfortable learning environment. Also, phrases like "nice to see you again," were amazing to hear! You also went over learners mistakes very respectfully. When a learner made a mistake, you asked them to re-read a certain sentence in the passage and asked how it might relate to another answer choice, which is better than just saying that they are wrong and why.
Tutor · 2 mo. ago
“
Around the 15-minute mark, one learner replied to "life" when the tutor asked the question of what is economics? The tutor asked the learner to elaborate on this. This shows that the tutor continuously engages the learner. The tutor also is checking the learner's prior progress. Around the 22-minute mark, the tutor asks his audience to answer a simple question of "What would you have done instead of coming to this session?" which again shows his engagement with the audience.
Tutor · 3 mo. ago
“
The tutor is very encouraging to the learners when they answer questions. At the 56-minute mark, the tutor replies with "awesome" when a learner has responded to the question correctly; this strengthens the learner's confidence. At the start of the class, the tutor says that the learners can stop him at any time to ask questions, and this shows that the tutor is creating a comfortable learning environment!

Luca, you were definitely well-prepared to tutor in SAT Reading and Writing. I like that as the class was discussing certain practice problems, you annotated the problem using different colors to delineate each learners' approach to solving it. When you add on to the learners' explanations, you make sure to include general tips that the learners can consider for all related questions (not just the specific question you're working on). I would suggest adding these tips to a separate document to which you can give the learners viewer access! This way, they can still recall these tips after the series is over. Overall, you did a great job!
Tutor · 3 mo. ago

What I love about Luca is that i really feel comfortable answering when im in his session, i don't feel judged if i didn't know the answer, he tries in many ways to help you achieve the correct answer and understand how did he get the answer. His personality in class is wonderful, he is fun and we use sarcasm, and im happy that italy lost :p . Thank you for being a teacher that i wished to have during my school years. Of course, this won't be my last session with you. -You have an organized slideshow (with a nice theme :) that you use to guide the session. For a lesson like this one, which has to do with SAT math and involves a lot of people, that's a must. You were definitely prepared on this end. -You understand new SAT technology such as Desmos and introduce it to the learners confidently. Desmos is definitely a great tool for SAT Math since the advent of the digital test, so good job! -You do a great job overall given the depth of your explanations and your ability to piggyback off of someone else's response or confusion. You evidently "know your stuff" and many of the participants seems to enjoy this session, so keep up the great work!

I loved the Mario theme you had going on for this session! The humor of it definitely eased up any tension that may have been present. You also greeted most/all of the learners by name and asked a few ice breaker questions, which was great. You constantly invite learners to read lines of your slides or participate in another sense, which created a sense of community between the learners; this is a great feat in such a big group. This group of learners also joke amongst each other often (while not straying too far from the topic, such as at 34:42). Good job overall! The only suggestion I'd have is to not spend too much time on getting to know one another, but since this session is so large, time is bound to be spent on that.
