SAT vs. ACT

In this session, we will discuss how the tests differ in format and content. 1. ACT Science vs. SAT Reading (Science Passages). 2. ACT Math vs. SAT Math 3. ACT Reading vs. SAT Writing 4. ACT English vs. SAT Reading Notes: * We will *not* cover how colleges interpret test scores. * In my opinion, I do believe the ACT is a more difficult test due to its breadth. However, some students may naturally do better on the ACT than the SAT. This session should help you become more informed about which one to take.

SAT Math

A good way of avoiding making mistakes in the SAT Math section is to do less in your head and to write out more steps as you do the problems. In this session, we will focus on improving the quality of written-out work, including tips like rewriting the question, defining variables clearly, writing out steps more explicitly, and checking your work. This session will be based on Practice Test #3. Even if you have done it before, you can see how the ideal written-out work may differ from your own.

SAT Reading & Writing

New regular time -- Sundays at 11am Pacific. Mark your calendars! We will practice paraphrasing on a Khan Academy SAT history practice passage (Federalist 5). As we walk through the passage, I will evaluate your paraphrasing and point out any errors. Then, I will demonstrate how to apply your paraphrasing to the answer choices. This practice is a great way to develop reading skills: evaluating the author's use of evidence, drawing the proper conclusions, learning new vocabulary in context.

We will practice paraphrasing on a Khan Academy SAT social science practice passage ("The Power of Kawaii"). As we walk through the passage, I will evaluate your paraphrasing and point out any errors. Then, I will demonstrate how to apply your paraphrasing to the answer choices. This practice is a great way to develop reading skills: identifying central claims, evaluating research methodology, and reading between the lines to understand the author's point of view.

SAT Reading & Writing

History passage practice. Rather than going through practice tests directly, we will read through Federalist 1 together (https://guides.loc.gov/federalist-papers/text-1-10). We'll carefully examine how Hamilton communicates his ideas using skills that the SAT reading test evaluates (main idea, evidence, etc.), and I'll explain techniques for tackling archaic language. Hopefully, this will inspire you to perform your own reading!
